The Art of Retirement
In 2008 after 35 in general practice in London. I retired. Determined to have a purpose for getting up in the mornings and wanting to always have a positive ongoing outlook in life, I wrote a bimonthly column for over four years in Dentistry magazine, the UKs number one dental periodical.
In addition, gardening was always my passion and I went around the local neighbourhoods putting a small advert in letterboxes promoting my gardening services. I placed an ad in the local neighbourhood magazine as well. I never dreamt that there would be such a huge response.
Now, seven years on, I have over 30 clients (not patients any more ! )
I am working five to six days a week, and from February to December, attend two to four gardens a day. I am learning a lot about plants, garden design, and where to plant.
For me gardening is really an extension of dentistry. You have to have a neat, ordered mind and be nice to the clients! It is a much healthier lifestyle. Also, I can now dig bigger holes in the soil than I ever did in teeth, and nobody says ‘ ouch !’
Also, over the past five years of so, I have, with my wife, been enjoying art and have
become a client of Christie’s here in London building a nice collection of small works.
These include four works by the Pissaro family. One Lithograph and one etching from 1885 and 1887 by Camille Pissarro. One Lithograph by Rodo his eldest son from 1900 and a small pencil sketch by Lelia Pissarro, Camille’s great granddaughter.
Including works by French artists, whose works I get great enjoyment from, we have collected some 20 pictures. I always buy because of the pleasure that the works give, not for what they may be worth in years to come. One has to know ones financial limit, as it is quite easy to get carried away!
So, my philosophy in retirement is: Always be positive, choose activities that you can get the most pleasure from and finally, get the most enjoyment you can from your family.
I am always more than happy to advise members of ARD on how I am managing my retirement.
