Book Review: Grain Brain

Grain Brain,  David Perlmutter, MD, Little Brown and Company, NY 2013. The fact that the author is a Board Certified neurologist and a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition adds credibility to this well researched book. Dr. Perlmutter presents evidence that shakes some well-established nutritional beliefs. Low fat diets are called into question as is the wide spread use of statin drugs. The author states that “the public is being deceived by the greatest health scam of the century.” Diets high in carbohydrates may well be key to the obesity epidemic in the US as well as the rising rates of dementia. The bottom line is to reduce the carbohydrates in the diet, and increase the proteins and fats. Molecular biology and the genetic code are  providing insights to the validity of some long standing beliefs. A very informative book.
