Human Longevity, the Major Determining Factors, Joseph A. Knight M.D. Author House, Bloomington, IN, 2010. This is one of the most comprehensive and well documented review of life expectancy and causes of death I have ever read. In the over 500 pages of text, there are 2799 references and studies cited. The author describes the relative effects on mortality of genetics, exercise, diet, body weight, substance abuse as well as other minor issues. The bottom line is that we are living longer, know more about the aging process, and have the potential for enjoying successful aging. Successful aging is considered the, 1) Low probability of disease, 2) high cognitive and physical function, and active engagement with life.
