In December 2015, Dr. Hiltunen was invited to visit with the Michigan Dental Association to discuss issues pertaining to aging dentists. The Michigan Dental Association seems to be a leader in recognizing and taking action to address challenges created by the increasing number of aging dentists. It seemed the conversation was mutually informative and productive for both the MDA and our ARD.
It is a generally recognized fact that dentists can’t practice forever. Yet many dentists seem to live their professional years ignoring the inevitable eventual inability to practice. The bottom line is a need to improve education and communication about the aging and retiring process. The earlier dentists recognize and plan for the last third of their lives the more rewarding those years will be.
